Licence plate on the Slovenia vignette: correct entry and what to do after a mistake

Last checked: 3 November 2026

The Slovenia vignette is linked to the licence plate and the country of registration. Enter the plate without spaces, hyphens or other characters, exactly as it appears on the vehicle, and choose the country that issued it. Until the vignette’s validity starts, the plate, country and start day can be corrected. Once it is valid, only a minor error in the plate can be corrected, and only within 30 minutes of purchase.

How to enter the licence plate

  • Letters and digits only, no spaces, hyphens, dots or badges: a plate shown as “AB-123 CD” is entered as AB123CD.
  • Pay attention to similar characters, such as the letter O and the digit 0, or the letter I and the digit 1.
  • German E and H plates (electric and historic vehicles): the E or H at the end is part of the number and is entered in the plate field.
  • Seasonal plates: enter the plate without the period of the season.
  • Country of registration: choose the country that issued the plate, not the country where you live or where the car was bought.

Why the correct plate matters

Checks are carried out electronically, by cameras and inspectors, by licence plate and country. A vignette registered for a different plate or country does not exist for your vehicle during a check. The fine for driving without a valid vignette is €300 (€150 if paid within 8 days); see Fine for no vignette in Slovenia. Check the purchase confirmation immediately after payment.

Correcting errors: what is possible

WhenWhat can be corrected

after the validity has started, within 30 minutes of purchaseonly a minor error in the licence plate, only at a DARS point of sale or with a toll inspector

In the DARS online shop, a correction before validity starts requires a user account. If you ordered the vignette through our site, contact our customer service before the validity starts, with your order details and the correct data.

Wrong category or duplicate vignette

If you bought a vignette in the wrong category, or two annual or half-year vignettes for the same vehicle, you can apply to DARS within 30 days for a pro-rata refund. A fee of €6 is deducted. You then need a vignette in the correct category; see Which Slovenia vignette category do I need?

Practical tips

  1. Copy the plate from the registration certificate, not from memory.
  2. For a rented car, ask for the exact plate and country before buying.
  3. If you buy in advance, use the time until validity starts to check the details.
  4. After purchase, check the validity of your vignette by plate and country.

Frequently asked questions

Do I enter the plate with a space or a hyphen?

No. Enter only letters and digits, without spaces, hyphens or other characters.

I noticed the mistake the next day. What can I do?

If the validity has not started yet, the plate can still be corrected. If it has already started and more than 30 minutes have passed since purchase, a correction is no longer possible.

Can I transfer the vignette to another car?

The vignette is linked to the plate and country entered. Outside the correction options described above, the plate cannot be changed.

Can I change the category afterwards?

No. The category can never be changed; only a pro-rata refund within 30 days, minus €6, is possible.

You can order the Slovenia vignette online with us: choose the category, validity and start day, enter the licence plate and pay. You will receive the confirmation by e-mail. Please check the licence plate twice before paying.
