Fine for driving without a Slovenia vignette: amount, checks and foreign drivers
Last checked: 3 November 2026
Driving on a Slovenian motorway or expressway without a valid vignette can lead to a fine of €300. If you pay it within 8 days, half the amount, €150, is sufficient. For comparison: the 7-day Slovenia vignette for a car (category 2A) costs €16.00. The rules apply equally to vehicles with Slovenian and foreign licence plates.
How checks are carried out
The Slovenia vignette is electronic: it is linked to the licence plate and country of registration, and nothing is displayed on the windscreen. Under the Slovenian Toll Act (ZCestn-1), compliance is checked by:
- cameras on the motorway network, which read licence plates,
- mobile control units,
- toll inspectors of DARS, the motorway company that operates the system,
- the police and the Financial Administration (FURS).
During a check, all that matters is whether a valid vignette in the correct category is registered for the vehicle’s licence plate and country. A vehicle without a valid vignette can be excluded from traffic, and a wheel clamp can be fitted.

Foreign drivers
A foreign licence plate does not protect you from a fine. Under the Toll Act, fines against foreign vehicles are enforced through the European vehicle register data exchange (EUCARIS), and the notice is sent in the recipient’s language. It is therefore important to select the correct country of registration when buying: a vignette registered with a different country will not be found during a check.
The most common causes of fines
- Wrong licence plate or country: the vignette exists, but for a different plate. See Entering the licence plate correctly.
- Wrong category: a 2A vignette for a vehicle that belongs to 2B. See Which Slovenia vignette category do I need?
- Validity ended: a trip from Saturday to Saturday lasts eight days and does not fit into a 7-day vignette. See Slovenia vignette validity.
- Wrong start day: a vignette bought in advance is not valid before the chosen start day.
- Payment not completed: the vignette is created only after the payment has been confirmed. Without a confirmation by e-mail, check whether the purchase went through.
How to avoid a fine
- Buy the vignette before you drive onto the motorway; the start day can be chosen up to 30 days in advance.
- Check the confirmation immediately after purchase: plate, country, category, type and start day.
- If something is wrong, correct it before validity starts. After that, only minor plate errors can be corrected, within 30 minutes of purchase.
- Before your journey, check the validity of your vignette.
Remember that the Karavanke tunnel has its own toll that the vignette does not cover. See Karavanke tunnel toll.
