Which Slovenia vignette category do I need: 1, 2A or 2B?

Last checked: 3 November 2026

The Slovenia vignette has three categories: 1 for motorcycles, 2A for vehicles up to 3.5 t lower than 1.3 m over the front axle, and 2B for vehicles up to 3.5 t that are 1.3 m or higher over the front axle. Ordinary passenger cars belong to 2A. Since a 2B vignette costs about twice as much and the category cannot be changed after purchase, it is worth checking it before you pay.

Overview of categories

CategoryVehicles7-day price
1single-track vehicles (motorcycles) with a track width of up to 50 cm€8.00
2Avehicles up to 3.5 t with a height over the front axle below 1.3 m; also three-wheelers with a track width over 50 cm€16.00
2Bvehicles up to 3.5 t with a height over the front axle of 1.3 m or more€32.00

Prices of all types are listed in the guide Slovenia vignette prices 2026.

The 1.3 m rule

The decisive factor between 2A and 2B is not the total height of the vehicle, but its height measured vertically above the front axle. Typical 2B vehicles are high vans and minibuses.

DARS, the operator of the Slovenian toll system, keeps a list of measured vehicle types. If your vehicle type is on this list as 2B, you need a 2B vignette. If the type is not on the list, category 2A applies. Check the category before buying, especially for vans, pick-ups and high SUVs.

Motorhomes

A motorhome up to 3.5 t is generally classed as 2A, regardless of its height. According to the German automobile club ADAC, the condition is that the vehicle is registered as a motorhome in the registration certificate. Before buying, check how your vehicle is entered in the registration certificate. If it is registered as a van, the 1.3 m rule applies.

Trailers and caravans

A trailer or caravan does not need its own vignette. The vignette for the towing vehicle is sufficient, provided the towing vehicle itself is within the vignette categories.

Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes

Vehicles with a maximum permissible weight over 3.5 t cannot use a vignette. They pay an electronic distance-based toll in the DarsGo system and must have a DarsGo device on board. This also applies to heavy motorhomes over 3.5 t.

Motorcycles and trikes

Ordinary motorcycles belong to category 1, which also offers a half-year vignette. A three-wheeled vehicle with a track width over 50 cm is no longer category 1, but 2A.

What if I choose the wrong category

The category cannot be changed after purchase, not even before validity starts. If you bought the wrong category, you can apply to DARS within 30 days for a pro-rata refund, with a fee of €6 deducted, and you need to buy a vignette in the correct category. What happens if a vehicle is checked without a valid vignette is explained in the guide Fine for no vignette in Slovenia.

Frequently asked questions

Which category is an SUV?

It depends on the height over the front axle: below 1.3 m it is 2A, from 1.3 m it is 2B. For high models, check the DARS list of measured vehicles; a type not on the list is 2A.

Does a caravan need a vignette?

No. A trailer or caravan does not need its own vignette.

My motorhome weighs more than 3.5 t. What do I need?

A vignette is not possible; you need a DarsGo device for the distance-based toll.

You can order the Slovenia vignette online with us: choose the category, validity and start day, enter the licence plate and pay. You will receive the confirmation by e-mail.
