Driving through Slovenia to Croatia: vignette, routes and tips
Last checked: 3 November 2026
If you drive through Slovenia to Croatia on the motorway, you need a Slovenia vignette. For an ordinary car, the 7-day vignette in category 2A for €16.00 is usually enough for the transit. The weekly vignette is the most popular type among tourists who drive through Slovenia to the south. Croatian motorways are not covered by the Slovenian vignette; the Croatian toll is paid separately in Croatia.
Main transit routes
| Coming from | Route through Slovenia | Towards Croatia |
|---|---|---|
| Austria, via the Karavanke tunnel | A2 via Ljubljana | Obrežje border crossing |
| Austria, via Šentilj | A1 from Šentilj | A4 to the Gruškovje border crossing |
| Hungary | A5 from Pince | connection to the A1 / A4 |
| Italy | A3 from Fernetiči or H4 from Vrtojba | via Ljubljana and the A2, or towards the coast |
On all these routes the Slovenian motorway sections require a valid vignette for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.
Things to keep in mind
- Karavanke tunnel: if you come via the Karavanke tunnel, you pay a separate tunnel toll (€9.00 since 1 January 2026) in addition to the vignette. See Karavanke tunnel toll.
- Coast near Koper: since 1 January 2026 vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes temporarily do not need a vignette on the H5 and H6 expressways between Škofije, Koper and Izola. Other motorway sections on the way to the coast still require one.
- Vehicles over 3.5 t: heavy motorhomes and other vehicles over 3.5 tonnes use the DarsGo system with an on-board device instead of a vignette.
- Trailers and caravans: they do not need their own vignette.
Return journey: the 8-day trap
The 7-day vignette is valid for seven consecutive days from the start day. If you spend one week in Croatia, for example from Saturday to Saturday, and drive through Slovenia on both days, one 7-day vignette is not enough for the return journey. You have these options:
- two 7-day vignettes, one starting on the day of the outward journey and one on the day of the return journey (in category 2A €32.00 in total);
- one monthly vignette (2A: €32.00), valid until the same day of the following month;
- for regular trips, the annual vignette (2A: €117.50).
For a holiday longer than one month, two separate 7-day vignettes for the outward and return journey are the most practical solution. Details in the guide Slovenia vignette validity.
Tips for a smooth transit
- Buy the vignette before departure. You can choose the start day up to 30 days in advance.
- Choose the correct category: a motorhome registered as a motorhome up to 3.5 t is generally 2A; high vans may be 2B. See Which Slovenia vignette category do I need?
- Enter the licence plate without spaces or hyphens and select the correct country of registration.
- Check the confirmation e-mail: plate, country, category, type and start day.
- Before departure, check the validity of your vignette.
